What Is a Bridal Photography Session?

Booking Tips, Portraits, Weddings

A bridal session, also known as an after session, is a photo shoot that takes place close to your wedding day. Unlike engagement sessions, which typically occur months in advance, a bridal or after session allows you to dress in your wedding attire and capture stunning images in a relaxed setting, free from the time constraints and pressures of the actual wedding day.

Extended Portrait Time

You might want your wedding day to unfold with as few interruptions as possible which means skipping sunset portraits — or maybe you want just a little more portrait time than would be possible on your wedding day while still spending most of the evening with your guests. A bridal/after session allows us to take our time and photograph you without the distractions and excitement of all of your guests vying for your attention.

Diverse Locations

If your wedding venue doesn’t offer the scenic backdrop you desire, a bridal session provides the opportunity to shoot in a location that holds personal significance or offers a different aesthetic. One of my couples was getting married in the Redwoods, but the coast was a special place for them, so we opted to do their bridal session at Montara Beach off Pacific Coast Highway.

Why you might want to book a bridal or an "after" session in addition to your wedding weekend coverage.

Alternative Attire

Whether you have a second dress, a sentimental outfit, or simply want to showcase different looks, this session allows you to do so without the constraints of the wedding timeline.

Redo Opportunity

This is a situation no one wants to be in but if your wedding day photos didn’t turn out as expected, a bridal session offers a chance to recapture those special moments in a controlled environment. I have had a couple choose to “redo” their portraits with me after being disappointed with images by another photographer.

Hair and Makeup Trial

Coordinate your session with your hair and makeup trial to see how your look translates on camera, ensuring you’re photo-ready for the big day.

Planning Your Session

Timing

Schedule your session 1-2 months before or after your wedding. This allows flexibility and ensures your attire is ready.

Location

Choose a location that complements your wedding theme or offers a contrasting backdrop. Whether it’s a beach, forest, urban setting, or studio, select a place that resonates with you. Here is a post about some of my favorite portrait session locations in Colorado.

Attire and Accessories

Bring your wedding dress, suit, or any alternative outfits you’d like to feature. Don’t forget accessories like veils, jewelry, and shoes. If you are having your session somewhere more rugged, consider bringing comfortable shoes, with the intention of switching into your wedding shoes once we have gotten to our scenic portrait spots.

Some people say a wedding is just another day; I believe a wedding is a culmination of your whole life up until that point, and a compass for where it’s going. Every piece of your wedding is an expression of who you and your partner are.

My imagery is meant to honor that.
